There is an interesting book, "Culture of Honor: The Pschology of Violence in the South," by Richard Nisbett, that might be relevant to this issue. As the title and subtitle make clear, it's about the dangers of honor codes. As a contrast, Kwame Anthony Appiah's "The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen" deals with positive as well as negative effects of honor codes, as well as studying honor codes as they specifically exist in certain cultures. There is a strong honor code in Native American culture. Shame and shaming are ever present. But I think this shame leads to far more self-destructive than destructive behavior.

There was actually a fourth shooting last week where someone responded to someone knocking on the door by swinging it open and blasting in New Mexico. The people knocking were police who were accidentally sent the wrong address for a domestic violence call (the dispatcher transposed a 5 and an 8 and sent them across the street). Police knocked and announced themselves and then realized they had the wrong house, started to leave (having never gone inside or tried to force the door, mind you, just knocked) and then the homeowner kicked the door open suddenly and drew down on the cops.
Wow. Substance is excellent, as always. You know you are rocking the boat when you have a full blown nazghul trolling. Thanks for your work! Hopefully, you get a feature to filter out the trash in the comment section.
