I think that's reasonable given our general sentencing statutes. But that's still a long time. we're so used to insane sentences that we consider sums of time like 5 years as "easy" — Jesus that's a year longer than you spend in high school, it's a long time in the course of a life.

This guy wasn’t at the Capitol, so my comment doesn’t really apply to him, but you may recall Chump’s cult cheering about the EO he did requiring a 10 year minimum for vandalism of federal property, it SHOULD apply to the people who vandalized the Capitol.

Ah ok, I didn't realize! Yeah I mean I think in the beginning they were definitely acting out their white privilege. And as I learned during just one night in jail that practically gave me a nervous breakdown, the guards do not give a fuck about your rights or comforts.

I knee-jerk was mad about this, but you’re right. I will still celebrate these scum bags getting convicted and jailed, but you’re right.

It feels especially overwrought and honestly - suspicious - given the heavy involvement of the FBI in the Proud Boys organization

I find it interesting. This jail/prison thing is just weird now. Yes these people are monsters and need to be dealt with but American prison is not the answer for anyone, however it’s the system we have and wow is it an abomination.

I think I might have taken that bottom photo! As part of this piece https://reason.com/2019/08/19/proud-boys-and-antifa-playact-protest-in-portland/. In any case, you are correct, 33 years is bananas. To be discussed?

I agree. But do you agree that he should serve some time -- 5 years maybe?

I certainly don’t condone what happened January 6 but the rioters/protesters have gotten screwed by the government. Their civil liberties have been violated and they have gotten excessive prison sentences or are still in solitary confinement awaiting sentencing. Just because someone isn’t liked by the ruling class doesn’t justify treating them any differently.

Have you considered they were put in solitary because they were still trying to conspire and commit crimes even in prison? Sometimes that has to happen especially when inmates get in prison gangs. I’m gonna go ahead and assume that was done because of their behavior in the jail.

You really can't assume that, people get thrown into solitary totally at the whims of guards. These guys aren't hardened criminals, they're loser posers.

Oh I know, I have been to prison (in the 90s, in NH, so not a hard prison) I just remember stories of them being problematic initially.

They’re getting treated the exact same way virtually all accused criminals are treated by the government, which is to say, badly. Maybe this will be a wake up call for right-wingers that our carceral system is messed up. (It won’t be lol)
